cinco de mayo
in honor of cinco de mayo, we went to the pediatrician for andrew's one week appointment. 10 day appointment technically. anyway, i am anxiously awaiting this appointment because i will find out if he is gaining enough. as a nursing mother, who already had one kid that didn't gain enough weight at first, this is a big BIG deal. i am completely psycho about bridget - and now andrew - eating well. or at least "enough". those early weeks with bridgie bear are to blame and now i get to feel the same angst all over again.
this time around it's different though. andrew definitely has wet diapers - which is the test. the test that's hard to administer the first time around since diapers are so freaking absorbent. with bridget, we'd hold the diaper up to the window and ask each other - does that look wet to you? the reply was invariably - it looks a little yellow. right? um, no parents. those were not wet OR yellow. o's mom gave me the best method to tell if the diapers were wet - you squeeze the front of the diaper and if its squishy, its wet. you see, the way they make those diapers so absorbent is to have the pee turn into gel once it hits the diaper. clever diaper people.
so, you will be happy to know, that andrew had gained enough weight in the first week. he was a few ounces over his birth weight. PHEW! i'm not over the trauma enough to stop tracking all of his nursing sessions, wet and dirty diapers though. maybe after the one month...

HI Mary,
Andrew is handsome!!! Congratulations on the newest additon to your family. Please let me know if you need anything. Don't get too worried about weight ... just think of Grace. She weighed 6 lbs 6 ounces at birth, came home a 5 lbs 6 ounces, and at days away from turning three she is a whooping 23 lbs. Some kids are meant to be small. I can't wait to meet the new guy!!
